On Tuesday Maddy & I went to the park near Carindale and met up with her best friend from swimming, Emily and her mum Marie. It was really hot and I came home sunburnt and very dehydrated. But Maddy and Emily had a fantastic time, they never left each others side and even went to the toilet together.
At one point Maddy was playing in the sand and was piling it all up. I asked her if she was building a sandcastle. She looked at me in absolute disgust and told me in no uncertain terms that she was NOT building a sandcastle but in fact "I'm building my empire".
So where did this statement come from I asked myself - Dad. Daddy took her to see the animated version of Star Wars, months ago mind you, but now they have a weekly series that aires on Saturday at 12 noon. Each Saturday Maddy & her daddy sit down and watch this show. Now she is starting to build an empire at three. What will she be trying to do when she is 4????
Teach them while they are young and impressionable is the advice you receive as a parent and Joel has truly taken this on board. He is determined that Maddy will support him during his retirement. So he started teaching her how to play golf. At three Joel has listed her as a prodigy in the making and for the first time in our married life I saw joel spend money on a whim. We went to the golf shop to buy our nephew a birthday present, walked out with the present and a set of clubs for Maddy.
In the store he asked the sales assistant to show us the kids clubs they had available. He pulled out a putter and took Maddy onto the practising green and placed some balls for her to hit. Amazingly, she managed to get most balls into the hole with one shot. She fell in love with the putter and didn't want to leave the store.
As soon as she got home daddy helped her unpack her clubs and they spent the afternoon practising in the loungeroom. Maddy even got some golf balls from daddy's bag and put them in her own. She is now set for Saturday's of golf with dad.
Last Saturday Joel took Maddy out to the golf course. She managed to play the firt three holes before tiring and had more fun playing with the sand and feeding the ducks. But she is much happier with her own clubs. Previously when we played golf we would hire her a small club but she would always end up trying to use Joels. Now that she has her own there is no sharing, and no one can touch her clubs!!
We also have her swimming and playing tennis. So there are a few backup sports in place in case she doesn't become a golf prodigy!!
